A Quick Disclaimer
First- It's a long post - Sorry!
Second - You might be wondering how an “expensive” laser facial fits into a frugal, low-tox lifestyle. Fair question. But low-tox and laser treatments actually have more in common than you might think.
Here’s my honest truth: I don’t love skincare. I don’t enjoy buying a dozen products, I don’t enjoy using them, and I’m not interested in layering fragranced creams and serums filled with ingredients I’d rather not put on my face.
What I do like? Laser. Machines. Technology. Treatments that deliver real, measurable results without requiring months (or years) of slathering expensive products morning and night that may or may not work.
For me, investing in advanced treatments that improve skin quality at the source often feels more aligned with a low-tox, minimalist approach than constantly rotating through products. Fewer bottles, fewer ingredients — and better results.

Why I Tried BBL + Moxi Facial
I’m 36 years old, and while I’ve had several BBL treatments over the years (most recently about six months ago), I started feeling like my skin needed more than just help with redness and freckles. BBL works beautifully for pigmentation, but my bigger concerns had shifted to skin texture, collagen loss, and overall signs of aging.
My goal has always been to feel confident wearing little to no makeup — using it to enhance rather than cover up. I want my skin to look even, smooth, and healthy on its own, without relying on concealer to hide texture or unevenness.
After years of BBL treatments, I had to be honest with myself: I am aging, and my skin now needs a different kind of support. I stopped using Botox and fillers about four years ago, which meant finding another way to “cheat” a little 😉 — one that focused on improving skin quality rather than freezing or filling.
A BBL Moxi facial laser felt like the right next step. It promised deeper collagen stimulation and texture improvement while still fitting into my preference for non-invasive treatments. I also decided to treat my neck this time around, since it’s often overlooked but one of the first places to show signs of aging.
What Is BBL + Moxi facial? (In Simple Terms)
What Is BBL (BroadBand Light)?
BBL (BroadBand Light) is a light-based treatment that targets visible skin concerns on the surface. It uses pulses of light to heat the upper layers of the skin, which helps break up pigment and reduce redness caused by sun damage, broken capillaries, and uneven tone.
BBL is especially well-known for improving overall skin clarity and brightness. It’s the treatment that helps freckles fade, redness calm down, and skin tone look more even and “clean.”
What BBL targets:
Sun damage and age spots
Redness and broken capillaries
Uneven skin tone
Overall dullness
Not All “BBL-Type” Machines Are the Same
One thing I’ve learned over the years is that not all light treatments are created equal. There are many machines on the market that claim to offer results similar to BBL, often at a much lower price.
I’ve personally tried one of those alternatives — Lumecca — and unfortunately it did absolutely nothing for my skin. That treatment cost me about $250 and I walked away with zero visible improvement in redness, pigment, or overall tone.
That experience really reinforced something important: the machine itself matters a lot, and so does the training of the practitioner using it. True BBL (BroadBand Light) treatments are performed with the Sciton platform, which is specifically designed to target pigment and vascular issues more effectively than many generic IPL devices.
While the upfront cost of a BBL + Moxi treatment can be higher, I’ve personally found it far more worthwhile than paying for cheaper treatments that don’t deliver results.
What Is Moxi?
Moxi is a gentle fractional laser designed to improve what’s happening beneath the surface of the skin. Instead of targeting pigment, it creates controlled micro-injuries that stimulate collagen production and encourage skin renewal.
In simple terms, Moxi focuses on skin texture and quality — making skin smoother, tighter, and more refined over time. It’s often described as a preventative or early-intervention laser, which is why it’s popular for people who want results without aggressive downtime.
What Moxi targets:
Uneven skin texture
Fine lines
Enlarged pores
Early signs of aging
Collagen stimulation
Why They’re Done Together
BBL and Moxi work on different layers of the skin, which is what makes them such a powerful combination. BBL improves what you can see on the surface — tone, redness, and pigmentation — while Moxi works deeper to improve texture, firmness, and collagen.
This “surface + depth” approach means you’re not just correcting visible issues, but also improving the overall health and quality of the skin.
Because of this balance, BBL + Moxi is often described as a “prejuvenation” or refresh treatment — ideal for maintaining youthful skin, slowing visible aging, and improving skin quality before more invasive treatments are needed.
Why I Chose BBL + Moxi for My Face and Neck
My main concerns going into this treatment were early signs of aging and skin texture. I started noticing that my makeup just wasn’t sitting the way it used to — foundation clinging in certain areas, emphasizing texture instead of smoothing it out. I also have a few stubborn broken capillaries, which BBL has always helped with, but I wanted something that went beyond tone and addressed the quality of my skin.
Treating my neck felt like a natural next step. I’d never had any laser treatments done there before, and since the neck often shows aging faster than the face, I figured this was the right time to give it some attention rather than playing catch-up later.
The biggest hesitation for me was honestly the price tag. A BBL + Moxi treatment costs about three times what I was used to paying for BBL alone, which made me pause before booking. But cost wasn’t the only reason I hesitated.
In the past, I’d been treated at a few well-known clinics in Calgary, and walked away feeling undertreated every single time. That experience made me cautious about investing in a more advanced laser treatment — I wanted to be sure I was working with someone who truly knew what they were doing and had access to high-quality machines. I had been actively looking for a new practitioner with excellent training and top-tier equipment, and I can honestly say I finally found her. (I will talk about the clinic & practitioner later in the post. Keep reading! :) )
Once I weighed the expertise, technology, and long-term benefits — especially collagen stimulation and texture improvement — the decision felt less like a splurge and more like a smart investment in my skin.
The Treatment Experience: What It Actually Feels Like
The entire appointment took about an hour and a half, including roughly 20 minutes of numbing before the Moxi portion. And trust me — you absolutely want the numbing. I can’t imagine doing Moxi without it.
Pain Level (Honest but Reassuring)
For the BBL, the first pass is generally very manageable. It’s more blinding than painful, thanks to the bright flashes of light. The second pass can feel a little “spicy” in certain areas, but it’s still completely tolerable. By the third pass — usually the more targeted spot treatment — your skin can start to feel a bit raw and sensitive simply because of the heat buildup, but it never crossed into unbearable territory for me.
The Moxi portion was different. If you can focus on your breathing, you’ll probably be okay — but I’ll be honest, it was more challenging for me. Since this was my first Moxi laser facial, my nervous system didn’t really have a reference point for the sensation, which made it harder to fully relax and manage the discomfort. It wasn’t so much sharp pain as it was an unfamiliar, intense feeling.
Sensations During the Treatment

BBL feels similar to laser hair removal in that you experience heat and a snapping sensation, though in my opinion it’s less painful. Moxi, on the other hand, was completely new to me. The best way I can describe it is like a prickly roller or wheel moving across the skin, almost as if tiny needles are rolling over your face — even though there are no needles involved at all.
Numbing: Yes or No?
BBL is generally very well tolerated without numbing. Moxi is a different story. While everyone’s pain tolerance is different, I personally wouldn’t want to do a Moxi treatment without numbing beforehand — and I was very grateful it was part of the process.
I also have to mention that the experience itself was a big part of this. I was treated by Laura Mora at Renew Glow Laser, in Calgary, and it made a huge difference. She’s incredibly knowledgeable, takes the time to explain everything, and makes you feel comfortable throughout the entire process — which, in my opinion, is just as important as the treatment itself.
Recovery & Healing Timeline (Day-by-Day)
Day 0: Came home and used an ice pack on my face. It felt like a terrible sunburn! I had redness and heat coming out of every inch treated!
Day 1: Skin already changing to a sandpaper texture (Side of my nose especially). Still having redness but looking a bit better. I didn't put any makeup (only my homemade calendula healing salve) but you can if you want.
Days 2–4: “coffee ground” pigmentation also known as MENDS / dryness showing up on cheeks, nose and on forehead.
Days 5–7: Light flaking of the "coffee grounds" and skin turnover
Week 2+: visible glow, tone improvement

No scrubbing, no picking, no sun. I used a home-made healing calendula salve as skin care and made sure my skin was constantly covered with it for the first 2 days!
My Results: What Changed (and What Didn’t)
Around the 2–3 week mark, I started to notice a visible improvement in my skin — especially in terms of smoothness and overall texture. My cheeks, in particular, felt noticeably more even, and my skin had that subtle, refined look that’s hard to achieve with makeup alone.
That said, I didn’t see any dramatic changes when it came to pigmentation or redness. While there may have been some slight improvement, it wasn’t significant enough for me to consider it a major result (at least not yet).
Going into this, I had a feeling that one treatment wouldn’t be enough — especially since it had been a while since my last treatments and I had never done anything beyond BBL before. Moxi works by gradually stimulating collagen, so results tend to build over time rather than happen all at once.
For me, this felt like a strong first step rather than a final result, and it helped set realistic expectations for what this type of treatment can do.
Pros and Cons of BBL + Moxi
BBL + Moxi has a lot going for it, especially if you’re looking for something effective without going down the more invasive route. One of the biggest advantages is the minimal downtime — you can get a meaningful skin refresh without completely putting your life on hold. It’s also a non-invasive treatment that works both as a preventative and corrective option, which makes it appealing whether you’re just starting to notice changes or looking to improve existing concerns. What I personally like most is that it’s actually working on your skin from the inside out, stimulating collagen and improving overall skin quality rather than just masking issues.
That said, it’s not without its downsides. The cost can definitely be a barrier, especially compared to more basic treatments, and it’s important to know that multiple sessions are usually needed to get optimal results. This also isn’t a treatment that delivers instant, dramatic transformation overnight — it’s more of a gradual improvement, so if you’re expecting immediate perfection, this might not be the right fit.
Who BBL + Moxi Is (and Isn’t) For
BBL + Moxi is best suited for people who want to improve overall skin quality without going down a more aggressive or invasive route. It’s ideal if your main concerns are things like early signs of aging, uneven skin tone, mild pigmentation, redness, and texture. If your skin is starting to feel a bit dull, makeup isn’t sitting quite right anymore, or you’re noticing subtle changes in firmness and smoothness, this type of treatment fits really well.
It’s also a great option for those who prefer a more low-maintenance, low-tox approach to skincare — meaning fewer products and more reliance on treatments that work beneath the surface to stimulate collagen and improve the skin from within.
That said, BBL + Moxi may not be enough if you’re dealing with deeper wrinkles, significant skin laxity, acne scarring, or more advanced sun damage. In those cases, stronger treatments like more aggressive laser resurfacing or other medical-grade procedures might be more appropriate.
In terms of age range, this treatment is often described as a “prejuvenation” option — meaning it’s especially popular for people in their late 20s to 40s who want to maintain and improve their skin before more significant aging sets in. That being said, it’s not limited to a specific age. It really comes down to your goals: if you’re looking for gradual, natural-looking improvement and are okay with building results over time, BBL + Moxi can be a great fit.
If you’re expecting a one-time treatment with dramatic, immediate results, or you’re trying to correct more advanced concerns, you may find yourself needing something stronger or combining it with other treatments.
Cost, Frequency, and Maintenance
The cost of a BBL + Moxi treatment can vary depending on the clinic, the area being treated, and the provider’s expertise. For my treatment, I paid $1200 for the combo, which included my face and neck for Moxi (the neck is often an added cost, so that’s worth keeping in mind).
When it comes to how many sessions you’ll need, most providers recommend a series of 3–4 treatments, spaced about 4–6 weeks apart for optimal results. This is especially true if you’re targeting texture, early signs of aging, or overall skin quality. One session can absolutely give you a nice refresh (which is what I experienced), but the real transformation tends to happen when treatments are stacked over time.
As for maintenance, once you’ve completed an initial series, most people move into a maintenance phase of 1–2 treatments per year. This helps preserve results, support ongoing collagen production, and keep skin looking consistent rather than starting over from scratch.
Where I Went for BBL + Moxi in Calgary
If you’re local to Calgary and considering this treatment, I had my BBL + Moxi done at Renew Glow Laser with Laura Mora, the owner.
After previous experiences where I felt undertreated, finding the right practitioner was a priority for me — and she completely delivered. Laura is not only highly knowledgeable, but also very honest in her approach. She takes the time to assess your skin properly, explain what’s realistic, and tailor the treatment accordingly.
For me, this made all the difference. A good machine matters, but the person using it matters just as much — if not more.
For 10% off your first treatment, make sure to mention the code "Referral-by-Steph" in the notes at booking.
Final Verdict: Would I Do BBL + Moxi Again?
Overall, I’m really happy with the treatment and the results I’ve seen so far — and yes, I would absolutely book it again (in fact, I plan to very soon).
For me, this treatment is best suited for someone who wants to improve their skin quality in a natural, gradual way. If your concerns are things like early aging, texture, uneven tone, or dullness, and you’re okay with building results over time rather than expecting an overnight transformation, this is a really solid option. It’s also a great fit if you prefer a more low-maintenance approach — fewer products, more results-driven treatments.
In terms of expectations, I’d say it was a mix of yes and no. I went into this knowing that I would likely need more than one treatment, especially since it had been a while and I had never done anything beyond BBL before. That part held true. Where my expectations didn’t fully match was with pigmentation — I thought I might see a bit more improvement in that area after the first session.
That said, the improvement in texture and overall skin feel alone made it worthwhile for me. It feels like a strong foundation to build on, rather than a one-and-done treatment — and that’s exactly why I’ll be going back for another session.
