Canning is incredibly rewarding, but it can feel overwhelming—especially for beginners. Even seasoned homemakers can find harvest season challenging when everything ripens at once and space quickly runs out.

These simple hacks and tips will help make your canning process smoother, safer, and far more organized.

Reusing Lids and Jars

Before reusing jars for storage or canning, always inspect them carefully for cracks or chips—both on the sides and along the rim, where damage is easy to miss.

Reusing lids is a personal choice and depends on their condition. I’ve successfully reused lids many times, but I avoid any that show rust or have a deep indentation in the rubber seal, as those are less likely to seal properly.

Finding Affordable Jars

Sourcing used jars from thrift stores, garage sales, Marketplace or friends/family.

Checking for proper size and quality.

Avoiding very old jars (1800s or early 1900s) as we don't know the quality of the glass at this point in time.

Organizing Your Canning “Tool Kit”

Keep all your essential tools together so they’re easy to find: jar lifter, funnel, bubble remover, lid wand, etc. You can also include labels if you use them (I don’t - A sharpie does the trick).

Optional extras include a magnetic lid holder and a canning rack for added convenience.

Always Wash Jars After Processing

After your jars have cooled, give them a good wash to remove any sticky residue or spills. This helps keep bugs and rodents away, since they won’t be attracted by lingering food smells. Washing also gives you a chance to inspect each jar before storing—making sure the glass is intact and the seal is secure. In the canning community, there is a little dirty joke going around that says "Always Wash Your Balls" .. because there is a well known jar brand called Ball. ;)

Labeling Immediately

Label each jar immediately after filling to avoid confusion. I usually use a fine-point Sharpie, but you could also try a dry-erase marker or reusable labels if you plan to reuse your lids multiple times (more than twice). Personally, I’ve stuck with a Sharpie so far, though I may switch to wet-erase markers next year.

Be sure to include the date, 03/26 for example, contents, and any relevant notes—like “sugar-free” or “spicy.”

Storage Organization (FIFO)

To keep your canned goods fresh and minimize waste, follow the FIFO principle—First In, First Out. Rotate your jars so older batches are used first, and store everything in a cool, dark, and dry place to maximize shelf life.

Bonus Canning hacks and tips

  • Keep a canning journal: track recipes, adjustments, and outcomes.

  • Prep ingredients ahead: chop, measure, and organize before heating jars. It keeps you from scrambling around and rushing.

  • Use funnels for mess-free filling

  • Prevent jar breakage: don’t shock hot jars with cold surfaces; use towels or racks on your counter.

Safety Reminders

Always follow tested, reliable recipes—or only experiment with “rebel” canning methods if you’re confident in your skills. When in doubt, throw it out—don’t risk spoiled food. If a jar looks or smells off, it’s best to discard it. (A witchy tip I sometimes use: I rely on dowsing when I’m unsure!)

Even small hacks can make a big difference in your canning process, making it easier, safer, and more organized. Whether you’re a beginner or a seasoned canner, a few simple tweaks to your workflow can save time, reduce stress, and help you get the most out of every harvest.
